Freshness From Overseas - A Success Story

In the middle of the 1980s, Günther Schütt imported his first strawberries from Mexico by plane. This made it possible to satisfy the demand for fresh, tasty strawberries outside the domestic season. At the time, this was not a matter of course. Mexican strawberries were followed by berries from California and other high-value products such as green asparagus, pistachios, dates, cherries, and stone fruits. California became the center of import activities and therefore Günther Schütt founded CAFICO – Californian Fruit Imports, in 1987.

The innovative salesman's claim to deliver his customers the highest possible quality year-round, continuously, coupled with Hanseatic merchant qualities, quickly made CAFICO a successful import company.

Even today, after over 20 years in the international fruit trade, the company is maintained by this same claim, which separates CAFICO from many competitors. A keen sense for exceptional quality and unusual products have helped Günther Schütt to build a worldwide network of suppliers, which still exclusively supply CAFICO today. This has enabled the company's range to expand with new products over the years.

The  CAFICO flagship, however, is and remains the Hawaii papaya, "Hapaya", which Günther Schütt successfully introduced into the German market in the late 1980s and to date still exclusively markets in Germany and throughout Europe. It is the "queen" among papayas and its unique taste is incomparable to any other papaya.

CAFICO is also the exclusive importer of the Formosa and Golden "Suntropic" and "Marin" papayas, which, due to their quality, are among the leaders on the German market.

Meanwhile,  CAFICO is led by Bettina Schütt, who took over the company from her father after over 10 years of work in the international fruit trade, in 2008.
